  • This is Bosio's statue of Hercules battling Achelous, who had transformed himself into a serpent.
  • Also in the Louvre, which was originally a palace, is the restored apartment of Napoleon Bonaparte.<br /> The interior, as one would expect, is opulent.
  • Napoleon's bedroom.<br /> He MUST have been short.
  • Stained glass windows in the Cathedral at Rheims, in Champagne.<br /> This is the Cathedral where coronations took place, and is also where Joan of Arc worshipped. <br /> The document proclaiming the unconditional surrender of Germany at the end of WWII was signed here in 1945.
  • This was the entrance to the city in medieval times, and it has been retained and incorporated into the city's architecture. There are now shops on each side of the gate, with apartments above them.
  • The city of Rheims was inhabited by the Romans, who constructed a wall around it. Part of those fortifications, these arches are now standing alone, marking the perimeter of the ancient town.
  • This memorial, to the sons of Rheims who did not come back from WWII, has a replica of Rodin's "Thinker" as its centrepiece.
  • At the epicentre of the world of champagne are the wonderful caves, originally dug out of the limestone below the ground by the Romans, who used the material for building.<br /> The caves, or cellars, now store the famous product. <br /> This is at the house of Taittinger.
  • After second fermentation, the champagne is stored in the caves until it is ready to be released.<br /> The sign indicates that this cave holds 113,355 bottles, which is rather intoxicating. The caves extend for many kilometres under Rheims and Epernay.
  • This building stands over the town of Lyons, and dominates the skyline above the convergence of the rivers where Lyons is situated. <br /> Called the Basilique de Fourviere, it is reached by a funicular railway.
  • The two rivers, the Rhone and the Saone, are still used for transporting goods.
  • This Roman amphitheatre on the hill of Fourviere was only discovered in the last century.<br /> It is now an archeological museum.<br /> It is a lovely, sunny place - great for a picnic lunch, as evidenced by the students we saw doing just that.

  • North-west of Lyons is Annecy, situated on Lac d'Annecy near the French Alps, quite close to the Swiss border.
  • The water in Lac d'Annecy is claimed by the locals to be the purest in Europe.
  • Because of its proximity to the ski resorts, Annecy is an extremely popular holiday destination in winter.
  • But many people also visit in summertime, when the fabulous lake is very popular for boating.
  • However, many of the buidings along the lake front are closed tight until the winter months.
