  • And this is the view from the verandah late in the afternoon.
  • We took a photographic tour run by Kauai Photo Tours. It was a hoot. This is the first scenic spot our guide Matt took us to. Idyllic hey?

  • Must be someone's favourite relaxing spot - this chair was already at the lookout, ready for Jo to try it out.

  • A very handy tree! It is both a seat and a sunshade.

  • The Opaeka'a falls near Kapaa.
  • A place called Hawaiian Village near Kapaa where you can hire outrigger canoes and kayaks to paddle in the Wailua River.
  • Rock fisherman.
  • The Kilauea Lighthouse, built in 1913. It is no longer in use, having been replaced by an automatic beacon in 1976. This lighthouse is now listed on a heritage register. It is situated in a national park on the northern shore of Kauai.
  • These fields are probably growing taro - it grows in wet fields like rice does. Taro was the principal food of the Hawaiians before westerners arrived. It is extremely nutritious but not all that tasty to western palates. Taro is still used extensively in Hawaiian cooking but mainly as a supplement.
  • Trimming the coconuts so that they don't fall on peoples' heads. This guy had a utility belt with chainsaw and machete, as well as special climbing apparatus.<br /> In the old days it would have been bare feet and a knife.
